Position Title: Lead Engineer – Electric System Engineering

 

Job Description:

Lead Engineer – Electric System Engineering (Rochester Gas and Electric Corporation; Rochester, New York); Perform engineering analyses and develop design solutions for the electrical substation, transmission system and protective relay system. Engineer conceptual and detailed designs such as single line, system diagram, and Relay One Line. Conduct system capacity studies and perform engineering calculations including pre and post fault current study (Aspen model), DC system battery load profile, AC station service and generator sizing and current transformer saturation calculations. Originate electric system and component reliability studies, outage contingency plans and capital budget proposals. Determine corrective action for operating deficiencies. Recommend system improvements for transformer capacity based on customer loads, switching arrangements improvements taking into consideration safety and reliability, and develop the economic project proposals for these and other improvements. Provide project management support for major electrical substations and transmission construction projects. Develop and validate engineering analyses and apply engineering judgment to solve complex technical problems such as line protection in the event of fault, and relay coordination at electrical substations with remote ends. Confer with engineering contractors and consultants to discuss existing or potential projects. Demonstrate new technology such as electric intelligent devices to engineering contractors and consultants, and implement it to enhance power system performance. Provide power system commissioning support and supervision to third party contractors when required. Provide electrical engineering support during the construction phase by interpreting construction designs and reviewing installations. Develop technical specifications and standards for purchasing and configuring equipment. Administer contract terms and conditions, track budgets and schedules, and supervise field construction to ensure compliance with regulatory authorities such as the North American Electric Reliability Corporation and the Northeast Power Coordinating Council. Approve changes within contract scope and help negotiate contract settlements. 40 hrs/wk, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm (Job Code: KBGFJG52033-2).

 

Requirements:

Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field and 2 years of related work experience with electrical substations. In lieu of a Master’s degree and 2 years of related work experience, employer will accept a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related technical field and 5 years of post-baccalaureate progressively responsible related work experience with electrical substations.

Of the required experience, must have 2 years of experience in each of the following:

  • Engineering calculations for short circuit, voltage drop, and cable ampacity
  • System modelling in Electrical Transient and Analysis Program (ETAP), AutoCAD, and CYMECAP
  • Substation layout design
  • Technical reviews of substation designs
  • Load flow study analysis using ETAP
  • Engineering coordination
  • Performing fault duty/motor start status; and
  • Circuit analysis including voltage drop capacitor and regular siting.
     
    This position requires up to 10% travel.
