Lead Design Engineer

To lead in the development and costing of concept engineering solutions on the transmission and distribution networks. This will include providing effective engineering leadership and specialist advice on a wide range of engineering disciplines and providing policy guidance. Close engagement with Scottish Power Major Projects Division is a key aspect of the role

  • Perform all duties with a strong emphasis on safety, quality and environmental excellence.
  • Develop and assess the feasibility of concept engineering solutions and prepare budget costings for complex projects.
  • Review technical specifications prepared by SP Major Projects to ensure technical and financial requirements are met.
  • Provide technical leadership on policy, design, construction and operation of transmission and distribution networks.
  • Be at the forefront of best industry practice and be a champion in its implementation.
  • Maintain a strong awareness of technological advances and ensure that engineering proposals incorporate the most efficient technologies.
  • Be at the forefront of best industry practice and be a champion for its implementation.
  • Take a leading role in technical aspects of price reviews to ensure that submissions are sufficiently robust.
  • Provide specialist technical knowledge to support Engineering Services, the Licences and the Iberdrola Group as required.
Skills and Requirements

We are looking for candidates with the ability to represent departments or project teams across a wide range of engineering disciplines, in relation to a broad scope of engineering issues, decisions, standards or industry best practice.  This will be achieved through good interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses. You will also possess the following skills:


  • Working knowledge of health, safety and environmental legislation.
  • Significant experience in a responsible position and expert knowledge in one or more of  the following areas at voltages from 33kV to 400kV: Switchgear, Transformers, Cable Systems, and protection and control
  • Transmission and distribution system operation and maintenance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong people skills with the ability to form effective working relationships with other individuals, departments and businesses.
  • Sound understanding of the energy industry structure and legal/contractual framework.
  • Working knowledge of Scottish Power Energy Networks policies, procedures and working practices.
  • Expert knowledge of network and business data and network management systems.
  • Proven ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges.


To be successful in this role you will need to demonstrate as a minimum:

  • Degree educational qualifications in a technical/numeric discipline or demonstrable equivalent experience.
  • Significant, hands on, experience of design and/or delivery of complex transmission and distribution projects.
  • Proven ability to communicate with other technical specialists and with senior management.
What we offer

This is a Permanent contract. Salary for this role will be from c£48,527 per annum.
