Technician - Field Operations OSG


Rochester, NY, US



This position is responsible for the installation, maintenance and repair of radio, networking, and
telecommunications systems in Operational Smart Grids (OSG). This may include minor projects as they apply to
the discipline. This position requires 24 X 7 availability and on-call duties.


1. Responds to complex technical issues using hardware, software, and network testing tools. Examples include,
but are not limited to: Radio base stations, mobile radios, telecommunication circuits, networking issues.

2. Installs and provisions mobile radio systems in new vehicles, transfers equipment from old vehicles to new ones,
maintains inventory of available parts and equipment. Provides technical leadership for vendor based activities and
responsibilities. (25%, P)
3. Acts as a lead person for radio and telecommunications problem resolution with other divisions within the
corporation (Cross-OpCo responsibilities). In-state travel required, up to 20%. Company vehicle provided –
non-take-home. (15%, P)
4. Provides updates and revisions to schematic diagrams, procedures and schedules as they relate to projects, as
well as assisting in the evaluation of new products and technologies. (10%, S)
5. Interfaces with Operations personnel to resolve communications problems for radio, networking and
telecommunications issues, and to install and maintain associated equipment. (15%, S)
6. Provides documentation and technical experience for field change orders to existing Radio, networking, and
communications systems. Employee may function as a backup for an OSG Field Engineer. (10%, S)

Skills and Requirements

• Understands use of test equipment including, but not limited to: Watt-meters, spectrum analyzers, oscilloscopes,
and telecommunications test equipment (T1, Ethernet, 2/4W).
• Understands vehicle wiring systems, interior wiring and fusing, and work with trim materials and wire installation
• Competent in use of computers and standard business software; Can learn custom programs specific to the
discipline or task (programming software tools, diagnostic tools).
• Competent with learning large-scale network environments, and how they interact. Able to think clearly about
critical infrastructure and be able to provide service and maintenance in often challenging conditions.
• Able to work in field and garage environments. Tasks may involve stretching, bending, kneeling, reaching, and
lifting up to 60 pounds.
• Able to engage customers (internal and external) and provide solutions for the many unique issues faced.
Customer service is extremely important in this role.
• Able to meet all mandatory company training and security obligations as required.

• Understanding of 2-way radio systems, infrastructure, components and equipment necessary.
• Demonstrated ability in computer networking, and telecommunications technologies.
• Knowledge of standard radio vendor hardware (Motorola, Kenwood, Vertex).
• Knowledge of standard radio system components and parts (antennas, cables, connectors)

Required Education:
• Associates degree in Electrical Technology, or 6-10 years of relevant experience and equivalent training.
