Lead Supervisor - Gas Operations


Pittsfield, MA, US Adams, MA, US Greenfield, MA, US


  • Primary responsibility is to manage the gas construction, operations and maintenance of gas distribution systems.
  • Oversees, plans and schedules new construction work, preventive and corrective maintenance, inspections and training activities.
  • Ensures that construction and maintenance is complete and in accordance with construction standards, following approved policies, procedures, safety rules, and budgets.
  • Interacts with customers to solve problems/concerns and ensures customer satisfaction.
  • Mentor and actively assist in enhancing the skill development of supervisors to ensure employee growth and development to become a leader within the organization.
  • Individual must possess a thorough working knowledge of operating procedures and provides support to other operations staff; resolves complaints; responds to gas emergency situations and/or facilitates Gas Operations response protocols to emergency situations.
  • Responds to all emergency situations, fulfills overtime assignments and on-call/office/field coverage as directed.  Provides both the administrative and managerial supervision to field Supervisors and bargaining unit employees.
Key Responsibilities
  • Manage the daily activities of supervisors and employees responsible for the gas construction and maintenance activities.  Supervises both company employees and contractor crews in the construction, operation, and maintenance of gas distribution systems to ensure system integrity and public safety.
  • Assumes duties and responsibilities of Manager in his/ her absence.
  • Frequent interaction with internal and external customers to solve problems/concerns and ensure customer satisfaction.  
  • Identify and implement best practices across the companies to ensure a productive and efficient organization.
  • Responsible for the scheduling and coordination of administrative departmental activities, not limited to, Operator Qualification compliance, training, vacations, shift scheduling, and other items as needed.
  • Directly assist the Manager in identifying development areas and developing performance improvement initiatives for the company.
  • Plans, schedules and directs new and replacement gas construction work, preventative maintenance work, inspects and performs corrective maintenance on gas facilities and provides safety training to the construction department employees as needed.
  • Collaborates with others regarding the administration and compliance of all codes, and standards to ensure the safe delivery of natural gas to our customers.
  • Responsible for processing payroll, overtime, and tracking employee productive/unproductive work time.
  • Ensure all employees fully understand their personal responsibility and accountability to adhere to standards of performance and departmental objectives in regards to safety and all other work related activities.
  • Align departments to ensure maximum consistency and flexibility amongst all work groups.
  • Provides input to and oversees the budget for the assigned work group(s).

  • Required Education: High School Diploma
  • Required Experience: 10 Years
  • Candidate must have at least 10 years of very strong gas Construction & Maintenance experience.
  • Must have administrative, communication and decision making abilities. Strong leadership/managerial skills required. Candidate must be available 24/7/365 to support gas emergency situations. 
  • An Associate degree is preferred.
  • Knowledge of underground gas construction, properties of natural gas, leak detection methods and procedures, CBYD regulations, State and Federal pipeline safety regulations, DOT 192 Hazmat and OSHA knowledge is needed.
  • The candidate must have strong quantitative skills with a proven ability to use/produce spreadsheets or other similar programs, strong written and verbal skills and a proven ability to use MS Office.
  • Must be self-directed and have demonstrated initiative and assertiveness skills with strong labor relations skills and experience with the grievance process and a working understanding of the Collective Bargaining Agreements.
  • Proven ability to multitask in a fast paced, mission critical environment.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and may require DOT Operator Qualifications.
