Job Summary

The Principal Engineer solves unique and overly complex problems using a broad perspective to identify and implement innovative solutions. The Principal Engineer serves as the expert in performing electric power system engineering analysis, design, and calculations pertaining to the repair of, replacement of, maintenance of, or new construction of, the electric distribution infrastructure. The Principal Engineer will contribute to the development of Departmental, Divisional or Corporate strategy and implementation of the distribution system; Manage and provide direction for resources inside and outside of the engineering department. Act as a facilitator, trainer, and experienced mentor to other engineers. Demonstrated ability to explain complex ideas and persuade others to embrace change.


Proactively identify, anticipate, and perform special projects/studies that innovatively solve unique and complex problems with broad impact to the business. Develop alternate methods or design concepts to resolve unique problems. Identify and improve engineering processes/services. Develop new Company standards and procedures based upon new technologies or industry changes. Instruct/mentor other engineers of all levels regarding distribution systems and the power industry in general. 

Perform unique, overly complex engineering analysis, design and calculations using standard engineering methodology and principles. Develop/present design concepts, determine alternate options/methods and create action plans to resolve issues or to improve processes/services of the distribution power delivery system. Be able to work independently with minimal guidance. Make presentations to corporate/regulatory/public entities regarding projects and design concepts. 

Serve as a subject matter expert (SME) for the distribution system. Interpret internal/external business issues and recommend best practices and/or process improvements. Independently apply design standards, industry codes, construction methods, material specifications, engineering guidelines, policies, and procedures. Participate in Industry associations. Recommend and champion new engineering processes, equipment, construction standards and operating procedures. Presents complex ideas, anticipates potential objections, and persuades others to adopt a different point of view. 

ork with the other distribution engineers to prepare, review, maintain, and interpret drawings (e.g., site plans, electrical schematics, one-line diagrams, material specifications). Establish and properly apply design standards, industry codes, design criteria, guidelines, polices and operating procedures. Recommend and champion solutions for non-standard situations. Identify/specify new equipment and technology; create and assemble highly detailed construction documents; create a work breakdown structure and other requirements as needed for the successful execution of the action plan. 

Lead and represent Distribution Infrastructure Engineering on assigned project teams, task forces and special studies. Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience and provide guidance to other project team members on Distribution Infrastructure design. Direct and review the engineering work of drafters, designers, Department engineers and outside engineering firms. Direct, follow and adjust the processes, policies and standards related to the distribution infrastructure to meet the customer and stakeholder needs. 


Promote cross functional teamwork on assigned tasks and projects. Work collaboratively and independently to specify and design systems to address specific/unique situations. Promote and follow the Company safety policies and practices. Accept responsibility for their safety and health as well as the safety and health of their fellow employees. 

Develop business cases and manage small projects/processes/initiatives or teams in accordance with applicable corporate guidelines. Coordinate phases of engineering for assigned portions of a project/program. Plan, schedule, monitor, control budget/estimates, construction plans and material orders for assigned tasks and/or projects. Follow updates in research and developments taking place in the power industry, through training and industry associations. Participate in the management of department resource allocation including developing forecasts and plans to ensure adequate resources and skills are available. 

Respond as needed to assist in storm restoration efforts.

Skills and Requirements

Education & Experience Required:


  • BS/BA Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited college/university
  • At least 10+ years’ experience performing complex engineering duties related to power systems with 4 years’ experience leading an engineering team(s).
  • Technical drawing or Computer Aided Design experience is required.
  • Project management skills are required.
  • Advanced technical training in power systems is required.
  • Experience with power flow modeling software is required.
  • Registered professional engineer is preferred.
