Senior Designer I

Job Summary

Responsible for transmission line design, drafting and reviews for major capital projects at Central Maine Power (CMP), New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG), Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E), and United Illuminating (UI).


The electric delivery system in Maine contains approximately 2,600 miles of transmission lines & 317 substations. The electric delivery system in New York contains approximately 5,600 miles of transmission lines & 621 substations. The electric delivery system in Connecticut contains approximately 130 miles of transmission lines and 28 bulk electric supply substations.


Position reports to the Lines Unit Manager, but the position will work day-to-day in a cross functional project team and support project needs as dictated by the Unit Manager.

Major Roles & Responsibilities
  • Assists Lead Engineers and Project Managers in capital projects,
  • Conduct design tasks using AutoCAD, Microstation and PLS CADD to conduct transmission line designs or perform analysis of existing lines,
  • Produce structure detail drawings, load tree drawings, plan & profile drawings, and construction make-ready documents,
  • Familiarity with document control procedures,
  • Considers innovative ways to undertake work, promoting automation and efficiencies in day to day work streams,
  • Provides recommendations on policies and goals desired and implements new/revised processes and procedures according to established guidelines,
  • Coordinates with other departments, consultants, and customers,
  • Works within the project unit, managing internal and external project resources,
  • Provides field support during construction,
  • Informs management and project teams regarding cost and schedule performance variances and corrective action required,
  • Continually monitors individual progress to ensure meeting of specific deadlines,
  • Attendance in cost and schedule meetings.


  • Ability to work in a team environment to deliver projects on time,
  • Competent in in utilizing MSExcel for data analysis,
  • Knowledge and understanding of relevant electrical industry safety codes,
  • Ability to learn and use internal databases,
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills,
  • Understanding of quality assurance processes and implementation with project structure,
  • Knowledge of main configuration and general arrangements of networks (substations, overhead lines and cable) infrastructures.



  • Ideal candidate will demonstrate an understanding of overhead transmission projects ranging from 34.5 kilovolts to 345,000 kilovolts,
  • At least six years relevant engineering, drafting or designing experience,
  • Field experience desired.


Required Education:

  • Associates degree or higher in Engineering and drafting technology, or relevant experience in the energy industry.
